WHAT DOES SICKLE CELL CRISIS FEEL LIKE?
You still read our stories? You're one wise fellow then😏. One part of sickle cell disease, sicklers hate, re - hate, must - hate and will forever hate is sickle cell crisis. It comes with terrible pains, pains that are meant to be delivered to murderers, not innocent humans. Again, I had a story compilation from three warriors on how sickle cell crisis feels <get your tissues ready>.
Someone came up to me, to describe her crisis experience.... she said, "Arghh sickle cell crisis!!! You can never get used to it. It felt like someone kept hitting my bones with a hammer, felt like a nail was continually dragged on my bones. Yet, some people, even medical professionals, felt I'm faking it! Sickle cell made me cry to the extent I had no voice to support it." How sad it is for you to go through this, and medical experts, will accuse you of faking it.
Kevin, a teenage boy, sent his story on this, he said, "Sickle cell crisis is so painful!!! I don't know the words to use to describe it, but the pains came so randomly and could last for days. Even when I am tired, and my body is hurting due to severe pains, I force myself to sleep but it doesn't change anything. The pains are unbearable." My heart weeps anytime I read this story, imagine what it feels like to endure such pain, sleeping even in the midst of bone aching pains.
The last story is from a girl named Mary. She said, "The pain is saddening, it weakens me and fills me up with negative emotions. It ruin my plans for the day and in some cases, lands me in the hospital. I got to know various pain killers as a result. Although, my body started getting used to some of them and they weren't so effective afterwards." I can imagine the heartbreak that comes with taking painkillers and they are rendered useless against sickle cell pains.
By now, some of our tissues are soaking wet, others are holding ourselves tight, to prevent the outpour of tears. Sickle cell warriors have faced and are facing a lot. Please be nice to them, understand their pains and mostly importantly, never accuse them of faking crisis. Also try to be an emotional support for them... Another Storytime has come to an end, but don't worry, more is rushing in!!!
